For the Serbian artist Milos Manojlovic, personal dislocation is clearly traumatised by the terror of contemporary events in The Republic of Yugoslavia. For Manojlovic there has been the constant anxiety of imminent catastrophe and readiness to leave Australia at any minute if he is required to return and defend his family. Milos Manojlovic's shifts between painting and poetry create thick tapestry like surfaces, impenetrable mixtures of tradition with the signs of modern chaos. In his poem 'Before an Unrealised Canvas' he writes:
'Everything within me is changing into
the crying of unrestrained waters
and I still sit before an unrealised canvas attempting to remember which color first pierced my eyes.'
